BAFFIN TECHNOLOGY’S TRIO™ STANDING FRAMES MAKING ALL THE DIFERENCE TO ONE PHYSIOTHERAPIST AND HER PATIENTS
A 23-year-old young man has been using a Baffin Trio™ Standing Frame since last summer with fantastic results. As a result of his Cerebral Palsy GMFCS 5 all aspects of J’s everyday life are affected as he us unable to move his lower limbs independently and has significant spinal kyphosis fixed with spinal rods C7 to S1. He also has visual impairment, is tube fed and has respiratory difficulty which requires regular suction.
The decision to purchase a Baffin Trio™ was takes as his previous standing frame was not meeting his needs as Physiotherapist Robyn Ingham explains: “He was unable to use the previous stander correctly as he is unable to lie supine due to his back and chest. However, the Trio provides a comfortable and supportive seat, and he can move to a standing position without having to supine. The amazing back spine which consists of Baffin Second Spine® Technology system is brilliant as it allows for the back to be adjusted to meet the shape of his deformity. Personally, I love the Trio™ and I think it should be used by more therapists and I would not hesitate in recommending the Trio™ and Baffin Technology to other physiotherapist as not only is the equipment superb, but they are a great company to work with. Simon has always been approachable, helpful and gets back to me in a timely manner. I also found him great with the families - the right mix of knowledge of his product but allowing them to be the expert on their child. He has always been more than happy to work with me”.
J loves his "chander" as his family call it. He loves standing but could not cope with the transfer through supine for a tilt table type stander, so the Trio™ is the ideal solution. His parents and carers find the Baffin easy to use, they all love it. The Trio™ has transformed standing for J, without it he would no longer be able to tolerate an upright weightbearing position which is vital for his bladder, bowel, respiratory and bone health.
Robyn has also been working a 19-year-old girl with GMFCS Level 5 and Dystonic Cerebral Palsy which affects all four limbs. Despite this, she is very independent, drives her powerchair using head controls and uses eye gaze technology to communicate and help her with her university studies. “My patient was finding that with her previous equipment she found it very difficult to transfer and did not feel safe as she was unable to get enough hip and knee extension to achieve a comfortable position. As soon as we started an assessment with Simon from Baffin, she loved the Trio™ as she found the seat very comfortable and supportive so she would be able to stay in it for a few hours while having the option to change position without having to be transferred to another piece of equipment. When she started university, she was concerned that if she needed to use a standing frame during the day she would have to leave her lecture be transferred to a standing frame then back to her chair but the Trio™ allows her to complete one or two lectures without having to transfer to a chair” commented Robyn.
The Trio™ standing frame features Baffin’s Second Spine® Technology system and pioneering balance seat which have been designed to create and support optimal positioning of the user’s spine and pelvis. In addition, this technology helps to prevent or significantly slow down the development of certain conditions and all this can be achieved while the user remains comfortable. Second Spine® Technology accomplishes this by anatomically mapping the patient's spinal curvatures to allow passive correction of the spine in a seated position by supporting the entire length of the back to reduce pressure on the individual vertebrae. By doing this, the Second Spine Technology also helps to prevent further distortions.
The Sit to Stand devices available from Baffin Technology are truly multifunctional as the user can sit up, lie down, and stand up (3 in 1) at the touch of a button on the remote control without the need to be transferred to another piece of equipment. As many parents know, placing a child in a standing position is time consuming and can often cause more stress and result in an incorrect spinal position. Parents who are already using the Trio have commented on how great it is to finally be able to move their child from sitting to standing in just a few minutes and this has been echoed by physiotherapists such as Robyn who are involved in their day-to-day care.
