KAREN ENOYS COLLEGE MORE THAN EVER THANKS TO BAFFIN TRIO
Portland College in Mansfield is a college for people with Special Educational Needs and has students aged between 16 and 25 with mild to severe levels of disability.
Many of the students require specialist equipment, such as Karen, who is now in her second year at the college and has Cerebral Palsy, which means she has complex educational and postural needs.
The physio and occupational therapy teams at Portland College first saw the Baffin Trio multifunctional standing frame at the OT Show/Therapy Expo and were immediately impressed as they knew it would be ideal for Karen. As Occupational Therapist Jessica Shirley explains: “To ensure Karen was comfortable and in the best postural position at all times, we had to have three pieces of equipment – a classroom chair, a standing frame and an Acheeva bed for both supine and side-lying positions. This meant Karen would have to be transferred several times a day to go from standing to sitting to lying, which was not only unpleasant for Karen but also took up a significant amount of her day when she could be learning or engaging with her fellow students. So, when Simon from Baffin Technology demonstrated the Trio at the show and explained how it was a three-in-one standing frame solution, we immediately arranged for Simon to come to the college and assess Karen”.
Within a couple of weeks, Simon was at Portland College assessing Karen, and it was immediately apparent what a game-changer the Trio would be for both Karen and the staff that work with her. Communication is an issue for Karen, but Jessica and her colleagues could tell that Karen liked the Trio and felt comfortable.
Karen has now been using her Trio for a year, and everyone thinks it is fantastic. “The Trio is a brilliant piece of equipment. It is very easy to set up, and all the education staff have commented on how easy it is to use and how happy Karen is when she is using it, especially when in the standing position. From a therapist’s perspective, the Trio is clearly very well built and provides excellent all-round postural support, which is vital for someone like Karen. The Trio is also excellent value for money, and we have been so impressed with it and with the service from Baffin Technology that we have ordered a second Trio – I would not hesitate in recommending Baffin and the Trio to other therapists who are looking for a three in one multifactional standing frame as Simon and his colleagues are extremely knowledgeable and take the time to ensure the child or young adult is comfortable and relaxed” concluded Jessica.
The Trio standing frame features Baffin’s Second Spine® Technology system and pioneering balance seat, which have been designed to create and support optimal positioning of the user’s spine and pelvis. In addition, this technology helps to prevent or significantly slow down the development of certain conditions, and all this can be achieved while the user remains comfortable.
Second Spine® Technology achieves this by anatomically mapping the patient's spinal curvatures to allow passive correction of the spine in a seated position by supporting the entire length of the back to reduce pressure on the individual vertebrae. By doing this, the Second Spine Technology also helps to prevent further distortions. The Sit-to-Stand devices available from Baffin Technology are truly multifunctional as the user can sit up, lie down, and stand up (3 in 1) at the touch of a button on the remote control without the need to be transferred to another piece of equipment. As many parents know, placing a child or young adult in a standing position is time-consuming and can often cause more stress and result in an incorrect spinal position. Parents who are already using the Trio have commented on how great it is to finally be able to move their child from sitting to standing in just a few minutes, and this has been echoed by physiotherapists who are involved in their day-to-day care.
