BAFFIN TECHNOLOGY MAKES EVERY DAY MORE COMFORTABLE FOR KELSEY
11-year-old Kelsey Lewis no longer has to transfer between different pieces of equipment thanks to her Trio standing frame from Baffin Technology.
At the age of three, Kelsey was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome a rare neurological disorder which affects approximately 1 in 12,000 and is almost exclusively found in girls. As a result of the condition, Kelsey is non verbal, non mobile and requires support with all day to day activities. Additionally, Kelsey has uncontrollable repetitive hand movements, epilepsy, cardia arrhythmia’s and scoliosis.
Kelsey’s mother Cheryl first heard about Baffin Technology from a friend who was purchasing a Trio standing frame for her son who went to school with Kelsey as she explains: “As soon as my friend sent me a video of the Trio I knew we had to try it for Kelsey and I got in touch with Simon at Baffin immediately”. At the time, Kelsey required hoisting between her activity chair, wheelchair and standing frame as she is unable to alter her position or transfer independently to maintain pressure relief.
When Simon visited the family to carry out an assessment, Cheryl also invited Kelsey’s physiotherapist and she was equally impressed with the Trio due to its functionality and ease of use. The icing on the cake was the fact it was available in purple which is Kelsey’s favourite colour!.
Kelsey has now been using her Trio 8 for months and the difference it has made has been fantastic not just for Kelsey but the whole family. “By having the Trio we can now quickly move Kelsey into a standing position to provide pressure relief and by standing, Kelsey is also able to strengthen her leg muscles. Not only can we now do this several times a day, but it is a much quicker process than in the past and also more dignified for Kelsey”.
